Uploading your book to KDP
Last reviewed 2026-10-05 against KDP’s help pages linked below.
What you download
- Interior PDF — every page of the book, at its trim size, with KDP’s margins for its page count.
- Cover PDF — one full-wrap file: back, spine and front, with the bleed KDP asks for. The spine is measured from the interior’s page count.
Both PDFs are checked after they are made (page size, page count, embedded fonts) before you can download them.
In KDP
- Go to your Bookshelf, choose + Create, then Paperback (KDP: Create a book).
- Paperback Details: the title, subtitle and author must match what is printed in your files exactly — KDP checks the manuscript against the details you enter.
- Paperback Content → Print Options: black & white interior on white paper, the same trim size as your book, and No bleed. The cover finish (matte or glossy) is your choice.
- Manuscript: upload the interior PDF.
- Book Cover: choose to upload a cover you already have, and upload the cover PDF.
- Answer KDP’s question about AI-generated content — which parts of your book are made by AI.
- Open the previewer and page through the book before you continue to rights and pricing.
Good to know
- If you make the interior again and its page count changes, make the cover again too: the spine width follows the page count.
- KDP limits how many new titles you can create in a week (KDP: Title creation limit). If you publish a series, plan your weeks around it.
- KDP’s file rules for paperbacks are on Paperback submission guidelines; the files are made to them.
